4 numbers to check every month — before year end surprises you

High sales but an empty bank account? That's not a mystery — it's a number you weren't tracking. Here are four; the last is the one most owners forget.

1) Real net profit

Not revenue. Revenue minus every expense — including your own salary as the owner. Many discover they're working without a real profit.

2) Available cash

How much is in the bank after near-term commitments (salaries, rent, tax due)? Profit on paper doesn't pay salaries.

3) Receivables

How much do customers owe you, and since when? Every day of late collection is free financing you're giving your customer.

4) Upcoming tax due

The VAT you collected isn't your money. Spend it, and the return arrives with no cash to pay. Keep it in a separate account from day one.

How to get them easily

Books recorded as you go + a monthly bank reconciliation + a short report. That's what we send our clients every month, on a single page.

Key takeaways
  • Revenue isn't profit
  • Cash matters more than paper profit
  • Keep collected VAT in a separate account
